Description
The Lone Cypress in Pebble Beach, Monterey, California, is considered one of the most photographed trees in North America. It is estimated to be over 250 years old and was set afire by an arsonist in 1984. Fortunately a lady who lives nearby saw the flames and reported it in time to save the tree. It is on the Pebble Beach resort which is on the 17 mile scenic drive in Monterey.
The admission to the 17 mile drive is about $10 and expect to see plenty of tourists. Most arrive in tour buses and stay about 10 minutes or so. There is an observation deck and several places along the road that the tree can be seen from.
This is an American Icon and unless you just want to say you have seen the real tree, just be patient, the hoards of iphone-selfie-snapping tourists do not stay long. After you have admired the tree for an appropriate amount of time, go to Point Pinos Lighthouse and Mission San Carlos Borroneo del rio Carmelo, aka Carmel Mission - both are well worth it!
